[WIP] Singaporeans gave a record $95.5 million in donations in 2021. And that was despite the protracted Covid-19 pandemic’s toll on jobs and finances. Surprisingly, our populace also ranks second in the world for being victims of financial fraud. The reason? A prevailing air of apathy and complacency towards tackling false information—off- or online. All of this has made it extremely easy for scammers to manipulate locals into quick and poorly thought-out decisions—as evidenced by an explosion in charity scam victims, leaving the beneficiaries of such charities and causes in the lurch.
[WIP] Besides staying informed of scammer tactics and falsehoods, it helps if everyone practices the simple act of pausing to clarify or verifying before every emotionally charged decision of giving. Our goal hence was to surface Singaporeans’ hyper-discerning side when considering products and services for scrutinising donations as well, thereby protecting the interests of the needy and our own.
